Lead Software Engineer
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the founders and take ownership of our product from ideation to deployment. You’ll also be responsible for building features that directly address staff and customer needs, from building out an operations management platform, to innovating an asynchronous essay editing product workflow (which currently generates over $1m in revenue).
At the same time, you'll use lots of data- and tech-driven insights to inform strategic decisions in the best interests of the company. Compensation and Benefits

Annual salary: $80-100k/yr

Note that our full-time consists of a 32 hr/workweek for the first 6 months of the year, and 40 hrs/wk for the 2nd 6 months of the year

Async Essay Editing

The fastest growing dimension of our business is college essay editing, which has grown from 300 essays in 2022 to ~10,000 in 2024! We currently need the most help developing backend architecture and new product flow for this system, as we expect to scale to 50,000+ essays in the next 2-3 years.
What You'll Do

Develop the database architecture within an internal operations management platform hosted on in Retool, to handle rapidly-expanding data storage needs

Innovate with the latest AI technologies and APIs to streamline staff’s administrative tasks and our customer-facing services like async editing, live tutoring, and writing competition

Analyze data in order to come up with numerically-backed insights, that can inspire new business decisions like launching new products or creating new features

To help you develop the best product for the company, we’ll also be requiring that our lead software engineer assists with Zoom college counseling and live writing tutoring for approximately 4-8 hrs/wk. In short, you will not be a coding monkey, but a product developer, engineer, and teacher, too!
Preferred Skills And Experience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Prior teaching, tutoring, college essay editing and/or college consulting experience

Sharp problem-solving and analytical abilities

Ability to quickly learn new languages from scratch

A deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis

Familiarity with traditional software management principles like agile development

Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT

Experience with software languages like JavaScript and SQL

Double major (or minor) in a humanities field, in addition to computer science

Capability to independently solve complex problems quickly
